Virechan therapy is defined as the medicated purgation therapy, which cleanses the Pitta and purifies blood, by clearing the toxins from the body.
Types of Virechan –
  1. Anulomana
  2. Sansarjana
  3. Bhedana
  4. Rechana
PROCEDURE OF VIRECHAN KARMA
The therapy is carried out in 3 steps –
  1. Purva karma
  2. Pradhana karma
  3. Pashat karma
Purva karma
(Preparation of the patient before pradhana karma)
a) deepan and pachan – It increases jatharaagni (digestive power) and brings lightness in the body. Herbs use e.g. chitrakadi vati; Trikatu churna, etc.
b) Snehapan – Medicated or non-medicated ghee is administered for 3 to 7 days depending upon the requirement of the patient, till observes the proper sign and symptoms of Snehan.

Proper Snehapan
Proper movement of vata downwards, Increased digestive power, Lubricated faeces which are soft and not well formed, Softness and Oleation of body.
  1. c) Abhyanga (external Oleation) and Swedan –
After performing internal Snehan the patient undergoes massage with herbal oil followed by Swedan of the whole body for 3 days
Along with these there is a proper diet regime that must be followed. Usually it is advised to take good amount of liquid and warm food that is easily digestible.
Pradhana Karma
The patient is made sure that he has slept well the previous night and that his previous food is well digested. Keeps the record of the pulse and blood pressure before, after and during the Virechan karma.
Administration of the drug of virechan as per disease conditions, Age, debilitation, etc. The patient will be subjected to oral intake of Ayurvedic medicines followed by fermentation. Gives patients a light and warm diet.
Good effect of Virechan –
मलापहं रोगहरं बलवर्णप्रसादनम् |
पीत्वा संशोधनं सम्यगायुषा युज्यते चिरम् || – C. S. Su. 15 / 23
Elimination therapy eliminates the Doshas, eradicates diseases, and restores normal strength and complexion. If administered correctly, it ensures longevity.
Pashat Karma
The patient is under observation till he/she achieves the strength. It is advised to avoid loud sound, noise, excessive walk or exercise, exposure to excessive cold, heat etc. Along with it special diet is followed.
