The method of expelling the impurities and vitiated doshas through the upper body is known as vaman (emesis).

PROCEDURE OF VAMANA KARMA The therapy is carried out in 3 steps –
- Purva karma
- Pradhana karma
- Pashat karma
Purva karma (Preparation of the patient before pradhana karma)
a) deepan and pachan – It increases jatharaagni (digestive power) and brings lightness in the body. Herbs use e.g. chitrakadi vati; Trikatu churna, etc.
b) Snehapan – Medicated or non-medicated ghee is administered for 3 to 7 days depending upon the requirement of the patient, till observes the proper sign and symptoms of Snehan.

Proper Snehapan
Proper movement of vata downwards, Increased digestive power, Lubricated faeces which are soft and not well formed, Softness and Oleation of body.
c) Abhyanga (external Oleation) and Swedan –
After performing internal Snehan the patient undergoes massage with herbal oil followed by Swedan of the whole body.
Along with these there is a proper diet regime that must be followed. Usually it is advised to take good amount of liquid and warm food that is easily digestible. Just before the day of vaman, heavy diet such as plenty of milk, curd etc is recommended.
